Parish Church, Maughold, Isle of Man, EnglandSeven miles north-east of Laxey lies Maughold, an isolated hamlet with an ancient parish church in the grounds of which is maintained an outstanding collection of early Christian and Norse carved crosses. There are 44 pieces dating from the 6th century to the 13th century, and ranging from fragments of runic carving to a 6 ft high rectangular slab. Within the church is the 14th century parish cross, whereon is found one of the earliest known representations of the Three Legs of Man ( the island's famous symbol). Only the island symbol found on the 12th century Sword of State predates it.
