Rushen Abbey, Ballasalla, Isle of Man, EnglandThe island's most important medieval religious site, Rushen Abbey, lies 2 miles north of Castletown at Ballasalla (Place of the Willows). Founded by the Cistercians in 1134, the abbey was abandoned by its inhabitants, the White Monks, in the 1540's and has latterly been employed as a school, then later as a hotel. An interactive exhibition explains much about daily life in a Cistercian abbey - particularly educational for children.
