Snaefell
Every thirty minutes the tramcars of the Snaefell Mountain Railway begin their journey, winding purposefully upwards from Laxey, through denuded moorland, toward the island's highest point. From the summit of Snaefell, Norse Viking for 'Snow Mountain', all four countries of the United Kingdom are visible on a clear day. The 4.5 miles of track were laid within seven months over the winter period of 1895 by 200 track-layers working in the most appalling conditions. Three miles below the summit the mountain-road drops into Tholt-y-Will Glen, one of the island's more picturesque corners, with its gushing rivers and attractive walks through verdant plantations.
