White Horse Hill, Oxfordshire, England

White Horse Hill is situated in a historical region of the county just west of the village of Wantage. The Hill is famous for its 360ft long horse carved in a chalk hill that overlooks the vale that bears its name. The origins of the carving are shrouded in mystery although legend does say that King Alfred (the Great), following his victory against the Danes in the 10th century, ordered its carving. Experts, however, believe that the horse was carved by a Belgic tribe, the Atrebates, which inhabited the area in the first century AD.

From the top of the hill splendid views can be seen of the surrounding area that boasts some charming and historical villages like Woolstone, Uffington and Wantage with their ancient inns, cottages and beautiful scenery.
